Back Pressure Testers

Back pressure testers are used to measure the amount of back pressure in an engine's exhaust system. Back pressure is the resistance to airflow that occurs when exhaust gases are forced through the exhaust manifold, exhaust pipes, and muffler. Back pressure can be caused by a number of factors, including:

  • A restricted exhaust manifold or exhaust pipe
  • A clogged muffler
  • A misfiring engine
  • A leaking head gasket

Back pressure can cause a number of problems, including:

  • Reduced engine performance
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Engine overheating
  • Engine damage

Back pressure testers can help you identify the source of a back pressure problem and take steps to correct it. There are two main types of back pressure testers:

  • In-line back pressure testers are installed in the exhaust system between the engine and the muffler.
  • Remote back pressure testers are connected to the exhaust system with a hose.

In-line back pressure testers are more accurate, but they can be more difficult to install. Remote back pressure testers are easier to install, but they are not as accurate.

Types of Back Pressure Testers

  • In-line back pressure testers
  • Remote back pressure testers

Benefits of Using a Back Pressure Tester

  • Can help you identify the source of a back pressure problem
  • Can help you correct a back pressure problem
  • Can improve engine performance
  • Can reduce fuel consumption
  • Can help prevent engine damage

How to Use a Back Pressure Tester

  1. Attach the back pressure tester to the exhaust system.
  2. Start the engine and let it idle.
  3. Observe the back pressure reading on the gauge.
  4. If the back pressure reading is too high, there is a problem with the exhaust system.
  5. Take steps to correct the problem.
