Chisels

Chisels are hand tools used for cutting, shaping, and removing material. They are typically made of hardened steel and have a sharp, wedge-shaped blade. Chisels are available in a variety of sizes and shapes, each designed for a specific purpose.

  • Straight chisels are the most common type of chisel. They are used for general-purpose cutting and shaping.
  • Bevel chisels have a beveled edge on one side of the blade. They are used for cutting and shaping at an angle.
  • Paring chisels have a thin, narrow blade. They are used for delicate work, such as carving and engraving.
  • Cutting chisels have a wide, flat blade. They are used for cutting large pieces of material.
  • Cold chisels are made of hardened steel and are used for cutting through metal.
  • Masonry chisels are made of softer steel and are used for cutting through brick, concrete, and other masonry materials.

Tips for Using Chisels

  • Use a sharp chisel. A dull chisel will be more difficult to control and will produce a rougher cut.
  • Apply pressure evenly. Apply too much pressure and you will damage the chisel. Apply too little pressure and you will not get a clean cut.
  • Use a hammer or mallet to strike the chisel. Do not use your hand.
  • Keep the chisel blade perpendicular to the workpiece.
  • Chisels should be sharpened regularly.
