Honing Tools

[Hones] are used to restore the crosshatch pattern on the cylinder walls of an engine. This is necessary to ensure that the piston rings have a good seal against the cylinder walls, and to prevent the engine from burning oil.

There are two main types of [hones]:

  • Bristol hones are made of a soft abrasive material, such as aluminum oxide or silicon carbide. They are used to remove small amounts of material from the cylinder walls, and to create a smooth, even surface.
  • Cylinder hones are made of a harder abrasive material, such as diamond or CBN. They are used to remove more material from the cylinder walls, and to create a more aggressive crosshatch pattern.

[Hones] are available in a variety of sizes, to fit different engines. They are also available with different grits, to allow you to choose the right abrasive for your needs.

  3. Attach the hone to a drill or power tool.
  4. Start the drill or power tool and slowly move the hone up and down the cylinder walls.
  5. Continue honing until the cylinder walls have a smooth, even surface and a crosshatch pattern.
  6. Wipe off the honing oil and clean the cylinder walls.

Safety Tips

  • Always wear eye protection when honing a cylinder.
  • Do not use a hone that is too large for the cylinder.
