Ignition Testers
Ignition testers are used to diagnose problems with an automobile's ignition system. They can be used to check for spark at the spark plugs, as well as to check the condition of the ignition coil and distributor cap. Ignition testers are available in both analog and digital models. Analog models typically have a needle that moves across a scale to indicate the amount of spark, while digital models display the spark voltage in volts.
Types of Ignition Testers
There are two main types of ignition testers: spark testers and coil testers. Spark testers check for spark at the spark plugs, while coil testers check the condition of the ignition coil.
- Spark testers typically have a probe that is inserted into the spark plug wire. When the ignition switch is turned on, the tester will produce a spark at the probe. If there is no spark, the ignition system is not working properly.
- Coil testers connect to the ignition coil and measure the voltage output. A healthy ignition coil will produce a voltage of 10,000 to 20,000 volts. If the voltage output is too low, the ignition coil is not working properly.
How to Use an Ignition Tester
Using an ignition tester is relatively simple. To use a spark tester, follow these steps:
- Connect the tester to the spark plug wire.
- Turn on the ignition switch.
- Press the tester's button.
- Look for a spark at the probe.
If there is no spark, the ignition system is not working properly. To use a coil tester, follow these steps:
- Connect the tester to the ignition coil.
- Turn on the ignition switch.
- Read the voltage output on the tester's display.
If the voltage output is too low, the ignition coil is not working properly.
Benefits of Using an Ignition Tester
Ignition testers are a valuable tool for automotive mechanics. They can help to quickly and easily diagnose problems with an automobile's ignition system. This can save time and money, as it prevents the need for unnecessary repairs.
