SAE Individual

SAE individual tools are precision measuring instruments used to make linear measurements in inches and metric units. They are typically made of steel or aluminum and have a hardened steel anvil and hardened steel blade. The blade is graduated in either inches or millimeters, and the anvil is typically marked with a zero point. SAE individual tools are used to measure the inside diameter of a hole, the outside diameter of a shaft, and the depth of a groove or slot.

Types of SAE Individual Tools

There are a variety of different types of SAE individual tools available, each designed for a specific purpose. Some of the most common types of SAE individual tools include:

  • Outside micrometers: Outside micrometers are used to measure the outside diameter of a shaft or other cylindrical object. They consist of a frame, a anvil, a thimble, and a ratchet. The frame is held stationary, and the anvil and thimble are moved together to create a measurement.
  • Inside micrometers: Inside micrometers are used to measure the inside diameter of a hole. They consist of a frame, a anvil, a thimble, and a ratchet. The frame is held stationary, and the anvil and thimble are moved apart to create a measurement.
  • Depth micrometers: Depth micrometers are used to measure the depth of a groove or slot. They consist of a frame, a anvil, a thimble, and a ratchet. The frame is held stationary, and the anvil and thimble are moved together to create a measurement.

How to Use SAE Individual Tools

SAE individual tools are relatively easy to use. However, it is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure accurate measurements.

To use an outside micrometer, first align the anvil with the object you are measuring. Then, turn the thimble clockwise until the anvil and thimble make contact with the object. The measurement will be displayed on the thimble.

To use an inside micrometer, first insert the anvil into the hole you are measuring. Then, turn the thimble clockwise until the anvil and thimble make contact with the inside of the hole. The measurement will be displayed on the thimble.

To use a depth micrometer, first insert the anvil into the groove or slot you are measuring. Then, turn the thimble clockwise until the anvil and thimble make contact with the bottom of the groove or slot. The measurement will be displayed on the thimble.

SAE individual tools are an essential part of any automotive mechanic's toolkit. They are accurate, reliable, and easy to use.
